The Storyteller Behind the Scenes: WANG Chih-Chen

The Chung Hwa Market has been rebuilt after almost 30 years!

Before the Chung Hwa Market is torn down again, The Inside the Arts team hurried to the set of “Magician on the Skywalk” to interview, Mr. WANG Chih-Chen, the man serving as artistic director of the production. We recorded every detail of his meticulous restoration of the Chung Hwa Market while we asked him to share the design concepts behind his expansive career in production design.

Chieh-Chen got started in the business under the guidance of director Hou Hsiao Hsien who provided him with strong support for many years. Along with Hou Hsiao Hsien, he´s collaborated with several internationally acclaimed directors, including Wong Kar-Wai, Luc Besson, and Martin Scorsese. Mr. Wang has been nominated for the Golden Horse Awards several times and was finally awarded the Golden Horse for outstanding production design in 2019 following his work on the film “Detention.” Audiences were deeply touched by the special thanks WANG gave to director Hou Hsiao Hsien as he accepted his award onstage.

Speaking of production design, WANG Chieh-Chen described Yasujirō Ozu´s films

as “Films that seem timeless the longer you watch them; both in terms of the artistic and design elements. All the elements seem to fall into place naturally. The more I think about it, I realize that the most timeless elements are actually the hardest to pull off.”

Join us as we take a look into the scenic world of Mr. Chieh-Chen.

Chia-Wei Hsu´s Archeological Trail Through Asia

In 2016 Acadamia Sinica worked with Spanish scholars to excavate a church and four graves built in the 17th century by the Spanish on Keelung and Hoping Island. The large-scale archeological dig continues to this day. Artist HSU Chia-Wei filmed this process to help him understand the important link between Taiwan and other Eurasian nations during the Age of Sail. His work has since developed into a series of projects.

HSU Chia-Wei shifted his focus to Hoping Island over ten years ago. During the Japanese Colonial Era, the shipyard on Hoping Island served as the southern-most military shipyard in Imperial Japan. Under the Nationalist Government, the shipyard also played an integral part in the subsequent Taiwanese Economic Miracle. The shipyard is a microcosm of contemporary history reflected in HSU Chia-Wei´s “The Story of Hoping Island.” The piece synthesizes memory, history, and fantasy to offer a highly individual interpretation of this historical period.

HSU Chia-Wei has gone on to create an Internet of Things that spans across Taiwan to Northeast and Southeast Asia. One link in his network explores Asia´s colonial history with a particular emphasis on the Age of Sail and the rather complex expansion of the Dutch East India Company into the Asian continent. In 2019 HSU went to Malaysia to shoot a new piece called “Stones and Elephants.” The project sought to connect the traditional beliefs of Malaysian shaman, modern cinematic technology, and Malaysia´s own colonial history.
